Chapter 16

Standing in the doorway of the cheerful, yellow nursery, Liam felt a smile spread broadly over his face. He had arranged everything the way he thought it should be, and his mommy assuring him he’d made the correct decisions made him feel very good inside. Everywhere he looked thrilled him to the core. He’d dreamed of being Little for so long. This was a room that beckoned to him.

Of all the furniture that Valerie had picked out, the beautiful crib was his favorite. Before assembling the rest of the furniture, he’d thrown the stiff comforter and sheets into the laundry so they would be soft and sweet smelling. Now tucked over the soft mattress, the bedding invited a Little to come take a nap. He’d had to talk himself out of a brief snooze.

Unfortunately, he had other things that he needed to accomplish. Since Liam had been discharged from the military, he had lived quietly on the land that he had inherited from his grandmother. He supported himself by repairing guns. His grandfather had been his first teacher. According to him, Liam had been born with a magic touch for restoring old rifles and shotguns. All Liam knew was that he enjoyed working with his hands.

He still enjoyed working on old firearms that had ceased working over the decades, but most of his work these days was on modern weapons. His grandfather’s old shop had been upgraded with some new machinery, but Liam still used many of the tools that his grandfather had used years ago. He still followed his grandfather’s practice of storing all the guns in the house when they were not being repaired. Liam had installed special safes at the back of the closet he had fortified.

After he finished assembling all the furniture for the nursery, the former soldier unlocked one of gun safes and withdrew a handgun. He had just started working on it before that momentous decision to go to the movies. Eager to see what repairs needed to be made, Liam headed out to the shop, carrying the weapon in a metal storage case lined with foam. Of course, he brought Ninja with him to supervise.

Immersed in his repair, Liam didn’t realize that he had missed lunch until his phone notified him that Valerie was returning home. Looking at his watch in disbelief and then his stained hands, Liam jumped to his feet as soon as he had reached a safe place to stop for the night. Carefully replacing the gun in the metal case, he turned off the lights and looking at his hands, leaned forward to grab Ninja by one ear with his teeth before jogging toward the house.

He met Valerie at the backdoor. She looked amazing. Liam had missed her so much. She laughed when she saw him, and the sound wrapped around him like a tinkling hug. She carefully reached up to rescue Ninja.

As soon as his mouth was free, he greeted her, “Hi, Mommy. I was working and lost track of the time.
